Lexicue is a growing library of topics, from volcanoes to German for beginners, written as quick puzzle cards. Learn the facts, build each answer from its clue, and Lexicue brings it back just before you’d forget. When a topic runs dry, anyone can add the next ten cards.

Free to play, always. Today’s deck needs no account at all.

The game

Not flashcards. A puzzle for every fact.

Every card in every topic plays the same way: you get the meaning, you work out the answer. Working it out is what makes it stick, and it feels like a game rather than homework.

  • Read the clue and build the answer from letter tiles
  • Stuck? Hear it read aloud, see it in a sentence, or take a letter
  • Fewer hints, more points, and a streak to keep alive
  • Miss one and a memory aid makes sure it lands next time

How it works

Every topic, the same four steps

  1. Find your level

Every topic has Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels, and topics nest as deep as you like: Arts › Music › Queen › Albums.

  2. Learn it first

New to a subject? Flip through the cards before you play: the fact, an example, a memory hook and the word read aloud.

  3. Play to prove it

Read the clue and build the answer from letter tiles. Fewer hints means more points, and a miss shows you a memory aid.

  4. Keep it for good

Everything you play joins your Memory Bank and comes back just before you’d forget, climbing the ladder until it’s mastered.

Explore

Thirteen subjects. Topics without end.

Start broad and go narrow. Each subject opens into topics, and each topic into narrower ones, started and grown by players.

  • HistoryEmpires, wars and the people who made them
  • ScienceSpace, chemistry and how the world works
  • Health & BodyOrgans, bones and keeping well
  • Arts & CultureMusic, books, film and painting
  • GeographyCountries, capitals, rivers and flags
  • Myths & BeliefsGods, legends and folklore
  • Sport & LeisureTeams, games and the rules
  • Language & WordsWords worth knowing and where they came from

Plus Technology, Nature & Animals, Law & Society, Business & Money and Food & Drink.

Languages

Learn a language the same way

Shared courses in German, French, Spanish and Italian, one level at a time from A1. Every card gives you the English and asks for the word, with the sentence it lives in.

  • Learn the words first, with audio and a memory hook
  • Get the article right for bonus points
  • Reviews stay in their language, so German stays German
  • The first three decks of every level are free

An encyclopedia tells you. Lexicue asks you, then remembers what you got right.

  • Instead of reading

    You play

Working an answer out from its clue is what makes it stick.

  • Instead of forgetting

    It comes back

Spaced review is built in. What you miss returns sooner.

  • Instead of editing

    You add a volume

Name what’s missing. Lexicue writes and checks the cards, and puts your name on them.

Built by the people who play it

Every topic grows ten cards at a time

When you reach the end of a level, add the next volume. Lexicue writes the clues, hints and memory aids, makes sure no answer repeats anything earlier in the level, and credits you on the topic page for everyone to see.

Start any topic

Name it and Lexicue finds its place, from Science › Space to Music › Feeder › Songs. Your first deck is free and shared with the community.

Rated by players

Two taps after each deck: how good, how hard. The best rise to the top of every topic.

A weekly deck vote

Suggest a topic, vote for your favourite, and the winner is built for everyone.

Leagues and streaks

Climb a weekly league, keep your streak alive, and follow the players whose decks you love.
